A trip to the movies? Too unspectacular. A meal at a fancy restaurant? Been there, done that. A couple’s horseback riding date on one of our lakeside trails is something out of the ordinary that everyone can enjoy. It's not just for Valentines day, a trail ride will surprise them and let them know you put a lot of thought into a fun and exciting date.

You will not find a more romantic or entertaining date than horseback riding at Benbrook Stables.

Are you looking for something to do with your co-workers or looking for a super fun afternoon of team building with your staff. Benbrook Stables can accommodate your entire staff with insanely fun team building activities and horseback riding along gorgeous lake trails. Your staff will remember this group activity as one of the most memorable and exciting. It’s all about engagement. There’s a pretty clear link between the personal bonds between your team members and their engagement level. A recent Gallup study found that close work friendships boost employee satisfaction by 50%, while people with a self-described best friend at work are seven times more likely to be fully engaged at work.

Another Gallup study reported that engaged companies consistently outperform the competition when it comes to things like profits, productivity, and turnover. (Pretty important stuff if you ask us.) And it stands to reason – the closer you are to your co-workers, the happier you’ll be at work, and the more likely you’ll be to sacrifice your discretionary time to help them succeed.

According to the American Heart Association, here are six reasons to saddle up.

  1. Cardiovascular health. A study commissioned on behalf of the British Horse Society found that horseback riding is indeed a good cardiovascular workout. Even just a half hour of riding is considered “moderate exercise,” said BHS PR executive Megan Hawkins, “while trotting exerts more energy than playing badminton.”

  2. Core strength. Sitting tall, pushing your legs into the body of your horse ignites the core muscles, which are imperative for balance and posture.

  3. Burning calories. In a Texas A&M University study, researchers focused on the amount of energy expended during high-intensity horseback riding. But you need not be roping cattle to burn calories. “Riding a horse for 45 minutes at a walk, trot and canter can burn up to 200 calories,” said Dr. Dennis Sigler, a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horse specialist and professor in the department of animal science at Texas A&M University in College Station. “If you do something a bit more strenuous such as cutting or reining, that can come out to nearly seven calories per minute for the entire length of the riding period.” Plus, lifting a saddle onto and off the horse’s back, carrying buckets of hay and water to its stall, grooming -- all these burn plenty of calories.

  4. Lowering blood pressure. One of the benefits of regular exercise is lowered blood pressure; horseback riding is exercise. Lower blood pressure can reduce the risk of heart disease. Plus just being around animals has been shown to do that as well.

  5. Helping make decisions. While riding, you’re constantly deciding whether to speed up or slow down, what paths to avoid, when the horse and you need a break. That knowledge translates into the rest of your life, too.

  6. Relaxing. The horse’s natural movement is calming; walk together and your bodies will be in sync. https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-bond-for-life-pets/pet-owners/horses-have-heart/6-health-benefits-of-horses

“I just feel so happy when I'm riding,” said Debby Rose, a life long rider. “It’s such a joy, whether I ride for 20 minutes or ride for an hour. I hop on my horse and enjoy God’s beauty.”

There are many obvious health benefits to riding, including developing a strong core and legs, but there are also many less obvious benefits, such as increased confidence and introspection. It is a moment in your day to be peaceful, quiet, enjoy the outdoors and be with nature in a calming and stress free way.

It's so much more than just having fun and learning how to ride— Being around horses teaches patience, self-discipline, and accountability. It can help build character and promote social development.
