Riding Class:

In the Riding Class at horse camp, campers learn Western and English riding, and even bareback at times. Safety is a priority, starting with approaching, mounting, holding reins, turning, moving forward, stopping, and dismounting. They explore saddles, bridles, bits, and blankets, understanding their use in different disciplines. Through grooming, they discover various brushes and combs, cleaning the horse's body, mane, and tail. On warm days, they shampoo, condition, brush, and prepare their horse for shows or evening turnouts.

Campers will gain practical experience in tacking up their horses while learning about various types of tack. They will be taught how to ensure saddles fit the horse properly, how to select suitable blankets, and how to properly fit all tack on their horse. Additionally, they will learn to recognize different parts of the saddle and bridle, distinguish between English and western tack, understand the purposes of various tack items, and learn how to maintain their tack.

Arts and Crafts:

In Arts and Crafts this year, campers will get to decorate their own paint horse, make a dream catcher and a friendship bracelet. They will also learn to sing "Happy Trails" while out on a hayride. Arts and crafts time is a great time to have fun with new friends and make some fun things to take home from camp. Most go home singing Happy Trails on the car ride home, it is always a favorite activity among the campers. Depending on the day your child attends camp, they will get to do one or all of these activities.

All About the Horse and Anatomy :

"All About the Horse" program offers campers the opportunity to recognize the various colors of horses and understand the corresponding names for each color. For example, a brown horse with a black mane and tail is known as a Bay, while a brown horse with matching mane and tail is referred to as a Sorrel. Participants will also be taught how to distinguish various markings on horses and will have the chance to sketch and color these markings. Additionally, they will have hands-on experience with a variety of grooming tools, shampoos, hair products, brushes, curry combs, and more. One session will be dedicated to understanding the barn environment, covering everything from the role of a barn cat to stall cleaning procedures, providing a comprehensive insight into the daily life of horses in a barn setting. Campers will have the opportunity to feed the horses and observe and feel the different types of grain and hay. A comparison will be made between the diet of an older horse and that of a foal or filly. Some campers may even taste various grains themselves during this engaging experience.

Furthermore, we will delve into the emotions of horses and how to distinguish whether a horse is experiencing joy, sorrow, or perhaps some discomfort. We will educate them on determining a horse's age by examining its teeth and assessing its height in hands. Subsequently, we will familiarize the campers with the various parts of equine anatomy and allow them to use hair coloring markers to paint the manes, tails, and other features of a horse. While this may seem like a substantial amount of information for a five or six-year-old, we present all of these concepts in an engaging and interactive manner that keeps the campers unaware of how much they are actually learning.

Games:

During their time in the "Games" group, campers will enjoy running, playing, and competing with other groups. They will participate in various activities such as barn tag, obstacle course, scavenger hunt, hayrides, over and under, boot toss, and field day.

Fossil Digs:

Benbrook Lake, situated southwest of Fort Worth, is renowned for its fossil-rich grounds. The bedrock beneath Tarrant County predominantly comprises sedimentary rock strata dating back seventy to eighty-five million years to the Late Cretaceous Period. These rock formations are accessible in the Benbrook Spillway cut and several other exposed locations, representing remnants of an ancient shallow ocean that once covered this region. Over the past seventy million years, the ocean receded to its current Gulf Coast position in South Texas. This marine environment, which existed at a depth of around thirty feet, was home to various marine life such as oyster reefs, corals, clams, sea urchins, and ammonites. The ecosystem mirrors present-day conditions off the Texas coast, albeit without the presence of ammonites. Ammonites, now extinct, were mollusks with shells, closely related to nautiluses, squids, and octopuses. Many of the fossils discovered have modern-day counterparts, some of which bear striking resemblances, like oyster shells.

Wild Life:

At Benbrook Stables Fish Camp, children and adults can immerse themselves in the native wildlife of Texas. Engaging with nature is beneficial for people of all ages, fostering care and appreciation through knowledge. Through exploration and observation, Fish Camp educates participants on local wildlife conservation. Whether hiking, tracking animal prints, or uncovering fossils, there are numerous enjoyable ways to learn about nature. Come join us at Fish Camp to explore the beauty of the outdoors and discover the marvels of the natural world.

Additionally, your kids will get the opportunity to master the art of tying sailing knots, recognize various plants, birds, and wildlife native to the area. They will engage in entertaining activities, form new friendships, and acquire essential life skills that will stay with them forever.
